New plans are in the works to redevelop and remodel the old Republic Gardens space on U Street. The historic club was shut down here over 10 years ago.

Local DC developer The Goldstar Group has applications in place at the end of summer to revive the properties at 1355 and 1357 U Street NW as a large restaurant with rooftop dining and other modern features. The facade on U Street’s street level will be restored while the second story will be redeveloped to include a mezzanine and roof deck.  The site’s cellar level will be converted into storage space.

Jon Hensley Architects is helming the design. Prior attempts to redevelop the space by other third parties have been abandoned in the recent past. DC’s Board of Zoning Appeals and the Historic Preservation Review have already approved a past project converting the site into an 8 story building with 23 apartments and street level retail. No word on why this project mysteriously stopped.
