Benning Road’s River Terrace neighborhood in Northeast may get a slightly smaller version of Union Market. Neighborhood Development Corporation, a local developer with a great track record of successful projects, is planning the 11,200 sq. ft. Benning Market at 3451 Benning Road, NE.
Their plan is to outfit Benning Market with a variety of food stalls and a brewery or co-working space. Neighborhood Development Corporation raised over $250,000 using crowdfunding as a means to kickoff the project. The site, a former U-Haul location, is currently home of neighborhood events like the Market 7 Flea Market.
Benning Market has a tentative Fall 2018 opening date. There’s a real need for this type of venue here – the area has become a destination for middle-class homebuyers and investors looking to buy in DC for a little less than other NW and NE options. This is a big step toward fixing the food desert that exists east of the Anacostia River.
